Let's Talk Diamonds

If you are planning to buy a diamond it's good to familiarize yourself with the following jargon. Any dealer/jeweler will need the following information to help you select the perfect stone.

Below are the most popular shapes that diamonds are cut in.

THE 4 C's

When you talk diamonds, the four C's are always used to describe their characteristics.

The cut of a diamond describes the angles to which it is cut. Good workmanship allows the diamond to reflect more light. In short - the better the cut the more the diamond sparkles.

It is sometimes confused with the “shape”

Diamonds come in various colors but most diamonds found in jewellery stores run from colorless to near-colorless, with slight hints of yellow. The industry standard scale for measuring color begins with the letter D, representing colorless, and continues with increasing presence of color to the letter Z.

Diamond clarity refers to the absence of inclusions and blemishes. Diamonds without inclusions are rare and this affects a diamond’s value. The International Diamond Grading System grades clarity from internally flawless (FL) to obvious inclusions (I3).

Diamonds are measured by their weight and carat is the standard unit of measurement used.
While you may have certain preferences when it comes to diamonds, all 4Cs should be taken into account before you make your purchase.
